Courses in Assessment and Quality Assurance

These fully accredited courses are ideal for those working in or looking to work in assessment and internal quality assurance. You must be carrying out assessments and/or quality assurance in a learning environment such as FE, Adult Education, Employers and the Third Sector. This can be in any occupational sector, on accredited or non-accredited learning and qualifications on the National Qualification Framework (NQF).

Assessment Practice

Our Level 3 courses provide a pathway for you to understand assessment and if required, qualify as an assessor. You could be assessing competence or non-competence based learning, knowledge or skills. You will select the units and qualifications that meet the requirements of what you are assessing.

These courses are delivered through blended learning, including use of our virtual learning environment and e-portfolio system, attending online classes and workshops and also having direct 1:1 observations with your Tutor.

Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (online – day)

This is a knowledge-only award for those who are starting their journey as an assessor, or those who need to know about assessment practice but are not currently practising. Approximate duration: 30hours.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (online – day)

This course is for practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods: observation/examining work products/oral questioning and discussion/use of witnesses/learner statements/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Approximate duration: 90hrs.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (online – day)

This course is for practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally related subject areas using the following assessment methods: assessments in simulated environments/skills tests/oral and written questions/assignments/projects/case studies/RPL. Approximate duration: 90hrs.

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (online-day)

This course is for practitioners who may use all of the above-listed assessment methods based upon sound assessment principles. Approximate duration: 150hrs.

Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

This is a knowledge-only award for those starting their journey as internal quality assurance practitioners or those who need to know about internal quality assurance but are not carrying out quality assurance themselves. Approximate duration: 60hrs

Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

This course is for practitioners who conduct internal quality assurance of the assessment process from within a centre/organisation, by sample planning, monitoring and advising on the practice of assessors. Approximate duration: 120hrs.

Courses in Learning Support

These courses are delivered through blended learning, including use of our virtual learning environment and e-portfolio system, attending online and classroom based sessions and workshops and also having direct 1:1 observations with your Tutor.

NEW L1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools (day)

This 12 week course offers a knowledge based L1 qualification that will prepare you to work in a Support role within a school environment. Sessions will be delivered at New Directions South.

Starting: Thursday 23rd September 2021 at 9:30 – 12:30 and Tuesday 1st March 2022 at 9:30 – 12:30

    L2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (Teaching Assistant) (day)

    This course is suitable for those who are already working (paid or un-paid) in a school and want a qualification that proves their skills and helps them to develop their career. Units covered will include:

    • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people (3 credits)
    • Help improve own and team practice in schools (3 credits)
    • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour (2 credits)
    • Provide displays in schools (3 credits)
    • Provide support for therapy sessions (2 credits).

    In order to pass this course and gain full accreditation, you must be working (paid or un-paid) within a school environment. Your Tutor will need to conduct work-based assessments to make a judgement on your occupational competence. If you would like to complete this course, but do not currently have a work placement, please speak to us.

    NEW L3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (Teaching Assistant) (day)

    This course is ideal if you have completed Level 2 and have significant experience as a school support worker and wish to move into a more specialised role – in learning support and/or management. At advanced level, you will cover the following topics:

    • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults (2 credits)
    • Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people.
    • Support learning activities (4 credits)
    • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people (2 credits)
    • Support assessment for learning (4 credits).

    In order to pass this course and gain full accreditation, you must be working (paid or un-paid) within a school environment. Your Tutor will need to conduct work-based assessments to make a judgement on your occupational competence.
