GCSEs (General Certificates of Secondary Education)

New Directions College offers the opportunity to study and achieve GCSE qualifications to all of our adult learners over the age of 19. If you have not yet achieved a L2 English qualification, and meet residency criteria, you will be able to study this free of charge.

We have one English GCSE class available. The aim of this English Language GCSE is to enable learners to:

  • read a wide range of texts fluently and with good understanding
  • read critically and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
  • write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately
  • use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately
  • acquire and apply a wide vocabulary alongside knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • listen to and understand spoken language, and use spoken Standard English effectively. Spoken language will be reported as a separate grade on the student’s certificate.

You will study at New Directions South through blended learning sessions online and within the classroom. You will also be given access to a range of e-learning resources and assessment tools. GCSE classes begin in September and run through until May. Exams are usually taken throughout May and June. The results of GCSEs are released on the same day nationally.

Before you enrol, you will need to take an assessment. This is to determine this course is the right one for you.

Once you have submitted an application, one of our team will get in touch with you to organise an assessment. We can then advise you on available courses and your eligibility for discounted course fees. In the vast majority of cases, our English classes are free of charge under the Legal Entitlement to first full Level 2 English qualifications.

Starting: September 2022

Course fee: An assessment is required to determine your eligibility for funding. However, the vast majority of our learners are eligible for full funding and will not have to pay a fee.

English Functional Skills at Entry Level to L2

The new Functional Skills qualifications are intended for anyone wishing to develop their English. They focus on both the underpinning skills as well as the ability to apply English to different contexts.

Functional Skills qualifications are available across five levels (Entry 1 to Level 2), and can be completed in a wide range of college, community and work-based settings.

Before you enrol, we will work with you to assess your current level of skill. We will then provide you with advice and guidance about which course and level we believe is right for you. We are able to offer English classes across our whole range of venues, on different days and at different times. Please speak to us to identify the best option for you.

If you require help or support to study, please let us know. We will be able to provide additional learning support.
