British Values

Promoting British Values

The five British values are:
  • Democracy
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance

British values were defined by the British Government in 2011. Understanding these values, and being able to demonstrate them will help all learners be prepared for life in modern Britain. All regulated education providers in Britain have a duty to promote British values and at New Directions College, we will work with all of our learners to ensure they are best prepared for living and working in Britain today.

During the majority of our courses, learners will gain:

  • an understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process
  • an understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law
  • an acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated.
  • an understanding of the importance of identifying discrimination.

This knowledge and understanding will be developed through group discussion and embedded within each scheme of work at course level.
