Today is National Numeracy Day, and the day is about much more than maths.
We see people gain confidence to check their payslips, help their children with homework, manage a budget, return to work, or simply stop feeling afraid of numbers.
Lakshani, GCSE Maths, shared: “After joining this course, I have become more confident in everyday maths skills. I now feel more comfortable managing money and checking prices when shopping. Learning maths has also improved my problem-solving abilities and helped me think more clearly.
Gaining a maths qualification will support my future career and further training because many jobs require good maths skills. It has also boosted my confidence in exams and interviews. Overall, learning maths has increased my confidence.”
Issaka, GCSE Maths, shared: “I just wanted to say that before starting my maths course, I often lacked confidence with numbers and avoided situations where I had to use maths. Since improving my maths skills at New Direction College, I feel much more confident in everyday life, from budgeting and shopping to understanding information at work.
Although I’m still working towards my qualification, I already feel more positive about maths and proud of the progress I’ve made so far.”
Mary, GCSE Maths, shared: “I joined New Directions with the intention of brushing up on my maths and making my brain cells work again. It has really been one of the best decisions I have made for myself.
The tutors, the helpers and all the administration staff are all so friendly and efficient. From welcoming you at the door until saying goodbye at the end of your session. The feeling of belonging is something all the pupils talk about. We also talk about the patience of the tutors and support staff, how they continuously repeat things to us until it becomes clearer.
If you are thinking about joining New Directions College for your maths journey I really do recommend it. Whatever your level of maths is. I now feel quietly confident about using maths in everyday life, and also quietly confident about living my life”.
Asfia, GCSE Maths, shared: “I started coming to New Direction College last September. When I was a child, my favourite subject was Maths. After getting married and having children, I put my education on hold. I was working part-time while also looking after my children, who had medical problems.
Since joining the college, I think it has been one of the best decisions I have made. Learning maths again has increased my confidence. Going forward, I am planning to become a maths teacher.
Coming to college for my maths class has made me more confident and allowed me to socialise with other students and make friends. I make sure that I attend all my classes and try not to miss any. Coming to college and attending maths class has made me into a different person.”
These stories matter because numeracy isn’t about getting every answer right. It’s about confidence, independence, and opening doors.
We’re incredibly proud of every learner who has taken that first step, especially the ones who never thought they could. We are also grateful to all our wonderful tutors for supporting them on their journey. #NationalNumeracyDay #BuildYourFutureHere
