In the college garden

A garden that is central to college life

Our aim is to create a space where everyone is welcome and there is always
something happening, and we are really pleased that we are doing this in partnership with Food4Families. Throughout the year there will be opportunities to get involved in projects that help bring the garden to life and create a space that
supports health, learning and community connection as well as into a
great place to relax between classes.

Building on the skeleton of an earlier garden, we have started by focusing on
reusing some of the existing raised beds to grow vegetables and creating a space
for outdoor learning. Another area has been earmarked for the development of a
small food forest. (A mix of shrubs and smaller plants, all of which can be eaten.)
Over time we’d like to plant other areas to encourage nature and provide spaces for
people to sit and relax between lessons.

Ways to get involved

  • Join the Garden Champions group – Great if you’d like to learn gardening
skills and can commit some time to regularly help out in the garden.
  • Drop in for a Gardening Party – Great for those who fancy doing an
    occasional bit of gardening.
  • Learn outdoors – Ask your tutor whether there are plans to make the garden
    the classroom!
  • Take a break – Over time we plan to start opening the garden for staff and
students to use for breaks, lunchtimes and other gatherings.
