This project-based ceramics course is designed for learners who want to develop and refine their wheel-throwing skills while exploring creative approaches to ceramic form and surface decoration. Learners will build their skills through a series of project briefs, using each project as an opportunity to practise and develop key throwing techniques. Beginning with the fundamentals of centring, throwing and shaping clay on the wheel, learners will gradually progress to more complex forms and learn how to alter, combine and enhance thrown pieces using hand-building techniques. As confidence and technical ability grow, learners will be encouraged to interpret project themes in their own way, making creative decisions about form, function and decoration. Decorative techniques, including the use of slips, textures, glazes and surface pattern, will be explored throughout the course to help learners develop a personal approach to their work.
The course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced makers. Beginners may wish to attend our dedicated Throwing for Beginners course first, although this is not essential. Topics covered may include:
Centring and wheel throwing techniques
Forming cylinders, bowls and more complex forms
Altering and combining thrown and hand-built elements
Project development and design thinking
Surface decoration using slips and textures
Glazing techniques and finishing work
Please note: The studio has access to 8 pottery wheels, and classes are open to up to 12 learners. This allows learners to work flexibly between wheel-based and table-based activities, including hand-building, alteration, decoration and project development.
